£325 per person  Book before the end of May and get our discounted price of  £275 (incl VAT) per person.

The Workshop:

This workshop is designed to help provide you with the tools to prepare a portfolio of photography - whatever stage you are at.

Who is it for?

Anyone who wants a portfolio: For example, for university entry, during your course for some extra support, final major project development,  when preparing your portfolio for photography festivals or clients, personal project, or if you simply want to improve your skills at presenting your existing photographic work in a great way.

It is great for those needing to prepare a portfolio for UCAS January deadline, or for anyone else interested in having a photographic portfolio - whatever stage you are at and whether or not you already have photographs or ideas before the workshop.  You may just want to find a way to present your travel photographs better because that will make you happier, or it may be because there is something more serious going on - like maximizing your chances of getting into the University you dream of.  The point of this course is to help you move forwards in preparing your portfolio. Its fun and all who want to present their photographic work better are welcome.

How big is the group

Small is best. No more than 10 people in the group.  Once 6 or more sign up - as a special treat each class shall receive a lecture from an award winning photographer.  He or she shall also discuss your work and ideas in a group tutorial with you.

What should I expect?

A mixture of lectures, practical workshops and group discussion - all designed to develop ideas, build confidence in your work, progress existing work or develop new work  - it doesn't matter what stage you are at - portfolio development and helping you move forward with your work is the aim.  While professional and focused, I try to make it fun too.

What should I bring?

Yourself, a computer and a good notebook. (note notebooks help you develop and also help as a reference point when discussing how your ideas have formed. Many artists and photographers have them and if applying for Uni, they may ask to see your workbook at interview ... but if you are not applying to Uni then it is just great to have something you can refer back to). If you have photographs that you think you want to include in the portfolio please print them out no smaller than 6 x4 cm and bring them too.

What time?

Detailed timetable shall be issued to participants but we start at 10am and finish at 4.30pm on both days with up to an hour for lunch.  Central Edinburgh location.

What's the follow up tutorial?

Once the course is over ... yikes, what to do next?  Well, during the course we shall work on some next steps (specific to you) and we shall plan to meet for a one-to-one catch-up to see how you are getting on.  At this follow up tutorial - you will bring some new work (yay!) and we will discuss this, any challenges you face and other ideas to help you get to the next stage of portfolio development.  It is your 2 hour tutorial so it will be specific to your portfolio requirements.  This follow up tutorial will need to be completed within 3 months of the course end date - on a mutually agreed date and time.  We will book in a date at the end of the course but if you decide not to take the tutorial we can change the date as long as its within the 3 month timescale - but if you decide not to take the tutorial then  - there is no refund or discount, sorry.

However, we don't think you will want to miss it as its the next supportive step in helping you develop a great portfolio.  If you need more help after that I offer individual tutorials, online or in person too - or come along to our autumn or winter courses.

"A fantastic tutor ... expert knowledge and thoughtful critique  drawing on her experience in the professional field of photography and film making"  Adam Onishi MA Photojournalism and Documentary Photography

The boring but important bit:

Summer workshops are small and for that reason numbers are capped at 10 people. However this small number also means that we need 6 people for me to bring in the guest lecturer and tutor.  In the unlikely event of a workshop having to be cancelled you will have your full fee returned. If you need to cancel up to two weeks before the workshop you will have your fee returned less a 25% charge. Cancellations made 2 weeks or less before the day of the workshop are non-refundable.
